



India is estimated to have 3.86 million HIV affected people. Despite the interventions by the various government agencies and civil society organizations -“HIV/AIDS still remains a formidable challenge”. With the prevalence of HIV/AIDS affected people in many parts of the country, this epidemic poses to be, a serious public health challenge in India. Some of the worst affected states in the country being- Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Manipur and Nagaland. The infection levels among the ANC clinic attendees, in these states, have crossed 1%.

Given the magnitude and depth of this problem
in India, fighting AIDS requires strengthened partnerships between government,
NGOs, donors, and the international health community. The government is working
in close coordination with other ministries, NGOs, private sector, activists,
and international donors to establish and strengthen its national and state
level partnerships across sectors. NGOs have played a major role in the first
National AIDS Control Project particularly in the areas of communications
and social mobilization. HLFPPT is working in close association with government,
national and international organizations to fight the epidemic in the state
of AP, which is one of the worst affected states in the country.
