In Brief
Andhra Pradesh is a South Indian state, which has witnessed
a sharp increase in HIV affected people in the recent years. The Sentinel
Surveillance indicates sero-prevalence among Ante Natal Clinic attendees
at 1.62 % and among STD clinic attendees at 22.99%. The state of Andhra
Pradesh, which is home to 76 million, is divided into three geographic zones:
Coastal Andhra
comprising of ten districts
Telengana comprising
of 10 districts
Rayalaseema
comprising of three districts
The epidemic is in much more advanced stage in 8 of the 10 coastal districts of AP. The districts like
are indicative of the advanced epidemic. The Study of the two coastal towns of Andhra Pradesh, Kakinada and Peddapuram, indicate the HIV prevalence at 48.5% and 36% respectively.
The India AIDS Initiative Project, funded by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation seeks to reduce the incidence of HIV and STI among the sex workers in coastal Andhra Pradesh and their clients, thus reducing the risk of transmission of HIV, to the general population in Andhra Pradesh.
