Under the proposed project, 26 existing sites where the intervention among sex workers and their clients are being implemented by the Andhra Pradesh State AIDS Control Society (APSACS), managed by the Technical Resource Unit and implemented by the partner NGOs (supported by NACO), will be strengthened. Fresh strategies will be initiated in the 16 new sites identified by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for a near total coverage of the sex workers and their clients in the coastal districts.
Salient Features

In a Nut Shell
This program offers to collaborate with IAI strategy and contribute to the “Stretch Goal” for reduction in HIV and STI prevalence in high-risk groups in Andhra Pradesh. The project intends to change the behaviour of sex workers and high-risk male population, to seek early treatment of STI’s and practice consistent use of condoms. The BCC campaign, aims at creating an enabling environment, for the sex workers and high-risk male population, for seeking early treatment of STI’s and to practice safe sex. The scale of operations complements with the current response in Andhra Pradesh and the comprehensiveness to cover sex workers in the entire state in partnership with the other IAI initiatives
The project proposes to cover more
than 60, 000 sex workers and 2.5 lakh high-risk male population. The project
would also seek to integrate the activities across the different project
sites. Considering the unique nature of the ‘planned mobility’
pattern of the sex workers, especially in organized settings, they can seek
repeat services from facilities at other locations. Considering the level
of migration among street or home-based sex workers for temporary periods,
this arrangement would facilitate continued health seeking. An Attempt would
also be made to integrate with the other IAI partners, to facilitate a statewide
networking of facilities, thus offering a possibility of continued service,
even if the sex workers are mobile.
